My friend Alicia hit me up today with a picture of her street performing on Colley Avenue yesterday. Some would call her a mime though, to me, if you're not in the white makeup with the striped shirt, there is room for interpretation.

WVEC Channel 13 interviewed me today regarding all the busking work I've been doing over the last year or so. The best part? We were done with the interview and the guy says "too bad there aren't any buskers out here right now" and, literally, two appeared at the end of the same block we were on. Karma!

Legalize It. Publicize It.

Tomorrow's a big day, folks! SPIN (Street Performing in Norfolk), the pro-busking "group" I've been organizing for the last year is finally becoming legit. To make busking officially "legal" in Norfolk, the City Council will vote on the ordinance tomorrow night at 7pm. Click here to read all about the last year in busk, what started it, what continued it, where it's going. And if you're local, come out and support it!

SPINning

I can't believe I've waited an entire week to share this, but hey, better late than never, right? Last week, the Sunday paper featured the SPIN project I've been working on since May. 

Here's the article.  To sum up: "Because there is no law, Owens said, some officials and performers are confused about whether entertaining on sidewalks is legal, and people who might otherwise perform outdoors may not because they fear repercussions."

The weather's been picking up nicely around here and a busker (and often more) have been out every single weekend for months, and now I'm seeing them several times per week. There's a major opportunity coming up next month, with the second annual Art|Everywhere art exhibit/street festival. I'm so excited to watch this grow from something amazing last year to something much more.

BUSK You Up in My Love

This is big. Bigger than the event itself. Big because the point of its existance carries more weight than any single promotion, busker, or fan. Friday night, post-hurricane and pre-Labor Day, we invited buskers down to Colley Avenue. They came and sang and people walking to movies or ice cream shops got special treats for their eyes and ears. Check out SPIN to learn more. Here are some pictures I took:
